John and I were best friends.  We used to spend hours building out our model railroads.  We rode our biles for miles on end.  We were about 10 or 11 when our mothers used to let us take the Elevated train downtown by ourselves.  I also remember John, Murray Cantor, Malcolm Douglas and myself  going to the Mercury Theater on a Saturday to see the movies.   We all looked at ourselves as great explorers and decided to build a wooden boat out of scrap lumber.  I think all of us tried to get on our "ship. and we floated out to the middle of the Des Plaines River.  Suddenly our ship went down and we had to be pulled from the water.  Luckily no one drowned.  I am now the only one of our gang left.  For the last 8 or 10 years, I have tried to locate John with no success.  Even though we have not seen each other since graduation, I suddenly feel the loss.  My sincere condolunces to his family.

I have fond memories of John. We were in the class play together, crew not acting.  He was a sweet romantic, quiet and kind.  I also looked for years on-line to try to find him. It is so pleasing to know he married and has a daughter. My sympathies to his family. He is remembered well.

That is very sad news about John.  I wondered where he was, my last contact was when he was in Cincinnati and had questions for him about a train set for our son.  He was a very nice bright person with a keen sense of humor.  I am sorry to lose another Willard childhood friend.  Diane Gwinn Schaaf
