Caren - You and Kim Wehrli and I were best friends from 6th grade at Emerson Elementary through freshman year at OPHS. I came to the United States from Germany just before 6th grade with a huge accent, knowing little about life here. You and Kim made my transition such a pleasure. You were kind and funny, the best buddy anyone could wish for. We learned to dance, put on lipstick, like boys and talked of first kisses. I think it was Wally Menard and Terry Love with whom we sneaked cigarettes in the alley behind your garage on Kenilworth. One of many fond memories with you is listening to Elvis full volume so we could hear his breaths between words. Oh did we melt inside.

In the spring of 1959 you became suddenIy ill and I said goodbye to you while you were in the hospital. I was leaving to spend the summer in Germany.  Never could I have imagined it would be the last time I would be with you. You died in July.....I've missed you for so many years now.

Carol Eifrig (Silverman)

I remember that  Caren and I were in gym class together during Freshman year.  We used to sit against the wall in volleyball class (when we could take a break) and talk. She was kind and funny.  It was shocking to return to school in the fall and learn that she had passed away during the summer.  I think she was the first classmate I ever knew to die.  It was unbelievable.
