Betty was my best friend in grammar school (Emerson).  She was a gentle soul with a wonderful sense of humor .  We were often in minor trouble but rarely serious stuff because of her innate good sense, certainly not because of mine.  We did a lot of experimenting with those little gel caps of hair color that were supposed to give "highlights" but did nothing.  We thought we were qhite daring when we took up the hems of our skirts too. I'm lucky to have had a friend like her.

I met Betty Gungle in Kindergarten and we stayed friends from that day on - drifting apart from time to time but never forgetting each other.  Betty was the mother of three boys and we even recently tried to hook up her unmarried son with my daughter.  We became closer during our married years and when she told me she had multiple myloma, I was shocked but determined that she would be okay - as was she. After her bone marrow transplant, we thought she had bought at least several years but it was not so.  Shortly after Christmas of 2011, she was readmitted to Loyola hospital - about one year after her bone marrow transplant.  Her husband, Charlie, called on my birthday, January 19th, to tell me Betty wanted to wish me Happy Birthday - then he proceeded to tell me that the doctor said she probably wouldn't make it through the night.  I kept thinking "Betty, please don't die on my birthday" but then I thought she should go whenever she was ready.  She held out until 7:00 am the next morning - Bless her heart!  I stay in touch with Charlie and we laugh about the good times.  I sure do miss her!
